Unreal Tournament 3 Skies

This page contains a large number of custom assets for use with Unreal Tournament 3 skies.
It includes a wide variety of spherical sky textures, moon and planetary textures, various staticmeshes for use in rendering these texture objects, LensFlare textures, and others.

The files linked from this page are designed for use with Unreal Tournament 3 and are free for non-commercial use in Unreal Universe maps only.  Unreal Universe refers to these games: Unreal, Unreal 2, Unreal Championship, Unreal Championship 2, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Unreal Tournament 3.

You must include and reproduce the copyright and credits text as specified for each skies pack in your map's readme file or other documentation.  Even if you modify any of the files contained here for your own use, you must still include the copyright and credits text.

These files, either in their original format or in some modified derivative work, cannot be sold, cannot be bundled onto any discs or similar media for distribution, cannot be placed onto any other web site for download, and cannot be used in any other game other than those listed above.

Using the Sky assets provided on this page

Import the textures into Unreal Editor.  Normally they are imported into the map package.
Some of the textures require a custom StaticMesh also available here, others can be used with existing UT3 sky StaticMeshes where noted.

Some of the spherical sky textures here require a full sky sphere while others require a hemisphere sky dome.  See the information included with each file download.

To obtain a similar visual resolution quality as a UT2004 1024x1024 Skybox cube, a 4096 sky spherical texture must be used in UT3.  The issue with this is the large texture file size and the fact that older video adapters do not support rendering textures of this size.  UT3 will drop to the supported Mip on lower spec hardware such as 2048 or 1024.

The additional sky objects including clouds, moons, planets, nebulae, and others can be inserted into the map as desired to simulate those additional sky visual elements.

Unreal Editor Import Settings

When importing the sky textures, specify your map file as the Package, a logical Group name such as Skybox or TexSky, and use the following options settings to have a proper Material created for the texture.  Once the texture is loaded the Material will still show the default checkerboard, edit the Material with the Material Editor and simply move the TextureSampler to refresh the shader, then click on the green Check to update the Material.
