CTF-DG-PineRidge

by David R. Green
Unreal Tournament 2004 map #8

Deep within the emerald forest, far from civilization, where the pines rise like majestic rulers over the flora and fauna.  The clouds drift in, delivering with them their sun-showers, drenching all things in their passing.  In the midst of the tree-lined ridges, the battle for the flag begins...

CTF-DG-PineRidge

Description Capture the flag in a realistic pine forest setting.
Design This map was designed to look like a realistic paintball game area in the wilderness, or a hunting spot or military training and excercise area.  The difficult and very time-consuming task was placing all of the trees to look natural, which took many days.
Features - plenty of custom scripts, sounds, staticmeshes, and textures
- many custom designed and developed staticmeshes
- no CSG (BSP brushes) was used for greater map speed
- realistic high resolution terrain with multiple textures and deco layers
- custom in-house developed software was used in making the terrain
- plenty of shader textures
- custom scripted audio effects
- emitter objects
- moving clouds, rooftop raindrop spatter, and plenty of other detail
- a large number of custom audio sounds
Game Type Capture the Flag
Players 2 to 16 (recommend 4 to 12) (18 PlayerStarts total)
Map Specifications

Notes - Skybox Textures by Hipshot, modified by DGUnreal.
- Four software applications were used in the creation of this terrain including custom in-house developed software.
- Low end PCs should turn off the Foliage option (terrain deco layers) and set their World Detail level to Normal or Low, for an increase in game framerate.  Some of the Emitters are High World Detail only.
- This map is using an extreme number of staticmesh trees to provide a realistic environment.   The minimum recommended system is a P4-2.5GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI X700.   If you do not have at least a 128MB Video Adapter, staticmesh batching may not be enabled by the engine.

Regarding Tree Collision:

This map is using per-poly tree collision to provide a more accurate environment.
The pros and cons of this are as follows:
- Per poly collision allows for more realistic trees that provide you with cover from enemy fire, you can walk beneath or crouch under them, and you can actually jump up to the very top of the tree.  Certain tree limbs can also be shot through where there is sufficient spacing between them.  The downside to this is that you can get stuck underneath of a branch if you are not careful -- just like real life if you have ever tried walking through a pine tree.
- If a fixed collision cone were applied to the tree to prevent any and all possibilities of getting stuck underneath, you would not be able to walk or crouch beneath it, nor would you be able to shoot through between the branches.  Very unrealistic.
- If no branch collision were used at all, you would have no cover from any enemy fire.   Real bullets will not pass right through a 4cm branch and all of its needles, it will be stopped or deflected.

CTF-DG-PineRidge-SE:

The -SE version of this map has simplified Tree collision, which should help noobies who can't walk around the trees from getting stuck sometimes.
The downside is that you can not jump onto tree branches or climb trees.
Bugs - The xWeatherEffect and its tagged Volumes for the two forts is not functioning, even after complete re-creation of the actors and a rebuild all.
